This review is from: The Selected Works of Ho Chi Minh (Paperback)
Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh
We will fight, we will win.
It's hard to imagine anyone shouting this on a demonstration these days, but there once a time when the leader of the NVA was one of the most reveered world leaders, second only to Che Guevara. What is a shame is that our 21st Century has left such people behind as if their relevance belongs to another age. This collection doesn't help matters. Much of his writing is peppered with evidence drawn from a colonial world that no longer exists in the same way as it did when he was alive. The references to the treatment of indigenous people - the beatings, the torture, the murders - can easily be seen as the harsh realities of a world that has passed into history.
But while France may long since have lost its colonies, the mistreatment of what we refer to as the 'third world' continues with the same colonial spirit as it did before. Why else would the shoppers as Primark and George turn a blind eye to the £8 price tag on a pair of jeans made in a crumbling factory in India. What Ho Chi Minh had to say about the world is still relevant. There is still a vile and corrupt world that needs to be defeated. What you need to do with this is read it with a clearer understanding of how little the world has changed.
