I had heard good things about this novel.
According to my kindle I was 20% of the way by the time i gave up and here's why.
First off, the characters don't have names or descritpions, other than, 'the biologist' and 'the surveyor'
Secondly the dialogue is just awfull. As in, Biologist, 'I think I heard something,' Surveyor, "Did you hear something?"
Biologist, "No, actually I'm not sure I did." It really is that bad.
Third the investigation of Area X is boring, it has glacial slow paceing and zero atmosphere.
Fourth the 'characters' are like school children. If one of them thinks a mildly mean thought about another they instantly feel guilty and admonish themselves.
Finally it uses the sort of fake magic version of hypnotism that was debunked a hundred years ago. The type where you can
turn people on and off like puppets and make them do what you want.
If you like Derren Brown - Psychic Sally. Then you'll like this.
