3.0 out of 5 stars Bob Chilcott's "Everyone Sang", 17 Jun. 2013
By
This review is from: Everyone Sang (Audio CD)
This collection of choral music and settings by Bob Chilcott is most sensitively handled by the Wellensian Consort, conducted by Christopher Finch. This young mixed voice choir blend very nicely, but also manage to create a sort of 'push and pull' with the sound and intertwining of the different vocal lines that makes the listener feel as if the lovely warm, rich sound of this music is simply washing over them.
Pianist Gemma Beeson accompanies the choir throughout much of the recording, the simplicity, or apparent simplicity of the accompaniment supports the vocal lines sensitively, but also adds an extra depth and warmth to the overall sound.
Most of the pieces chosen for this recording felt well matched, with the exception of "A Little Jazz Mass", this seemed rather disjointed from the other, rather serene pieces. That is not to say that "A Little Jazz Mass" was not done justice by the the Wellensian Consort and the Will Todd Trio, because it was very well done and showed off the flexibility and diversity of the choir, who seemed just as at home in this repertoire, and sang it just as beautifully, as in the more classically choral pieces. It also showed the ability of the Will Todd Trio, which consists of Will Todd on piano, Jim Fleeman on drums and Paul Francis on the double bass, to have you swaying in your seat. "A Little Jazz Mass" just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of this recording and felt rather jarring.
After the jazz interlude, which only consists of five tracks, the recording returns to more classically choral pieces, where some of the most beautiful pieces occur.
This recording is a wonderful example of Bob Chilcott's ability to compose music for young voices, but in this you never feel as if his vision for his music had been impeded by this, on the contrary, his compositions are both varied and diverse. Bob Chilcott's "Everyone Sang" is well worth listening to.
