This review is from: Yeah, I Made it Myself: DIY Fashion for the not very domestic goddess (Hardcover)I really like the tone of voice in this book - but it's too fuzzy for beginners. I like most of her ideas, but when it comes down to it, I wouldn't actually make most of the clothes in the book, because they look sloppy in the photos, and would look awful on.
I really liked the look of the shift dress, so tried to make it, but without a pattern it's almost impossible to make to the correct size. The book suggests cutting the pattern as show in the little diagram (and take off or increase one cm per dress size), but the diagram is just a hand drawn picture with measurements drawn on, and anyone who's ever tried to make their own pattern will know how difficult it is, so it just ended in disaster and was way too small. The measurements were just impossible to get right, and the instructions on how to add darts and seams were very unclear, and just ended up confusing me.
I'm sorry to give this book a bad review, because it is a good read, but although the stuff should be easy to make, it isn't, it's just more confusing. Using a pattern is much easier.
