A mixed bag,
This review is from: Elgar - Symphonies Nos 1 & 2; Elgar/Payne - Symphony No 3 (Audio CD)
I bought this and returned it twice for a manufacturing flaw on the first disk (Sym No. 1). Saying that, I felt the recording of Sym. 1 was the standout, well-paced and colourful. The tempos were on the slow side, but that allowed the sound to blossom. The LSO was certainly at its best.
Sym No. 2 was a good performance, but sonically not as expansive as the first. The performance lacked the edge that made the other special. It's a solid, if unremarkable reading and the sound seemed just slightly flat.
The Payne/Elgar third is a good performance, both in sound and reading - I just don't like the piece. It doesn't sound like Elgar at times - worst of all, when it actually IS Elgar, as in a large proportion of the first movement, especially the opening. I have this feeling that Elgar would have done some serious revision before finishing it, and we don't have the benefit of that stage of the composition.
All that aside, if the set became available without the flaw, I would buy it again, if only for Sym. No. 1.
