Title: The Family Stone
The only thing this movie really has going for it is its great cast. It is a joy watching the cast showcase their craft. The only actor not up to the job is the movie's "star", Sarah Jessica Parker, who isn't able to give her character life and depth. The story is ambitious dealing with family, love and acceptance, sibling rivalry, illness and death and family vs. career. However, with so many characters, storylines and themes crammed into two hours, it is no wonder that the movie lacks focus and in the end it all comes to nothing (well maybe not "nothing" but the "pay off" for the viewer is indeed modest). As this is at its heart a rather traditional Christmas family movie, the writer obviously felt a need to tie up all the loose ends in the final 10 minutes. However, with so many loose ends, he went for mostly unbelievable, easy and cliché ridden solutions. In fact most of what happens in those last 10 minutes seems to go against what we've come to expect of the characters. But perhaps more troubling, none of the characters seem to really progress or learn from their experiences and therefore the promise of hope that the movie tries to leave you with therefore seems hollow.
