Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a pleasant enough read, but in the thriller genre, pleasantness isn't particularly an emotion high on the list of your expectations, really, is it. And that's one of the main problems at the core of this book. The plot- of which there are two actually, a slightly lesser one threading it's way through the main one- is simple, predictable and to be honest, rather dull. The characters, including the central one- an ex-gypsy copper who you would have thought at least would have had some complicated dark depth to- are pretty lightweight. And for a thriller, it has surprisingly little grit and flair. Sure there are the [template] cliff hangers and hero setbacks, but they always seem to be either easily resolved or fizzle out.

Basically, the whole book is just...well, too 'nice' and more like the outline for a afternoon TV drama than the 'biting, social thriller' it is billed as. It's adequately written, managing to just [but sometimes only just] stay out of outright cliche territory, but I don't think the author has actually been able to decide what sort of book he's wanted to write. It has neither the vicarious violence and snappy humour of a pulpy romp, nor the social bite and urbane stylisation of say, a David Peace novel.

So a good enough leisure read, just don't expect it to thrill or stay with you.
