This review is from: Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto In D Major / Serenade Melancolique / Souvenir D'Un Lieu Cher (MP3 Download)
As far as I'm concerned, Mariko Honda's playing of perhaps the greatest of violin concertos leaves everyone else with a stratospheric job to do in bettering it. This recording, made for Naxos over 20 years ago, still resonates with a verve and freshness I have rarely heard elsewhere. There is a rawness and an element of risk taking that utterly compels. There is fantastic clarity, too, in the production, which allows Mariko to shine. I have umpteen versions of this great work, but this late 1980s recording still wins every time on every level. It is warm, yet abrasive; occasionally frantic, yet deeply poignant. This is a truly fantastic recording you would be wise to add to your collection.
