This review is from: Are You Being Served?: The Movie [DVD] (DVD)
This film starts out in a rather rickety replica of the men's and ladies' fashion departments from the original BBC series. It had me put off from further viewing. Over time I gave it another go and I must say, it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Once the cast is away from the inferior props and safe in Costa Plonka the characters regain some of their original composure. In the seaside hotel they resume their sexual innuendoes and double entendres. Some even fully copied from the original series. Instead of the canned laughter, airport-lounge-music plays throughout the film, not enhancing the tongue in cheek humor. It is the sheer craftmanship of all the cast which makes this film worthwile. Leads Molly Sudgen, Wendy Richard, Frank Thornton, Arthur Brough, Trevor Bannister, John Inman and Nicolas Smith played alongside Andrew Sachs, aka Manuel from 'Fawlty Towers' and succeeded in making the most of the mediocre storyline and the - presumably - low budget. Spoiler: Even on the Spanish coast, young Mr. Grace turns up unexpectedly, rewarding the staff with his hallmark words; 'You've all done very well!'.
