Like many, I decided to purchase this book because of the positive reviews it received. However once I stated reading the book I already had my mind set that it was not as good as people made it out to be. In all honesty it took up to chapter 16 for the story to really pick up and become interesting. I won't deny the fact that I cannot remember most of the events that took place in the first half of the book. It really did feel like a chore reading the story because it was so boring to me. I did not even expect to finish it, and after reading five pages I vowed to never buy a Dickey book again. Nevertheless I continued to read it by force and glad I did so. After chapter 16 the story was very interesting, juicy and also made me smile a few times. The relationship between Shelby and Tyrone really made me imagine how much fun and excitement I was missing in my own life. Friends and Lovers was not a typical cookie cutter story either, as I and some would have expected it to be. Overall based on the beginning of the book I would give Friends and Lovers 2 ½/5 only because it should not have taken up to chapter 16 for the story to really pick up. But judging the book overall I would bring that up to 4/5 because once it did pick up, it made a great story in the end.
