Unlikely, but likeable,
This review is from: Notting Hill [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I must confess to a little prejudice towards 'Notting Hill' before I saw the film; I used to admire Hugh Grant's acting but I didn't like 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' at all. However, NH is altogether a better film, helped immeasurably by the effective illusion of chemistry between Julia Roberts and Mr Grant (Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell were TOTALLY unconvincing as a loving couple in the earlier film). Grant plays his trademarked English fop, this time a bookshop owner called William Thacker. Julia Roberts plays an arrogant highly-paid Hollywood actress (based on herself? Who knows! ) The film is helped by an outstanding British cast, and even though it becomes clear early on that 'Notting Hill' has no relationship with reality, the film's unlikely romance will keep you smiling even after the credits roll. Possibly the best character is Rhys Ifans as William's disgusting Welsh housemate!
