Great early symphonies,
This review is from: Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 22, 23, 24 & 25 (Audio CD)
This disc provides an excellent selection of relatively early Haydn symphonies. It displays the range of his experiments with form, such as the slow introduction to number 25, the concertante flute solo in number 24 or the austere chorale-like first movement that dominates number 22 and inspired its nickname. The tempi are well-judged: minuets move with grace, the fast movements really fizz and slow movements are stately without being ponderous. The performances are vividly recorded using period instruments.
