5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy Greaves the maestro sixties goal poacher extraordinaire has a tale to tell, 26 April 2013
This review is from: Greavsie: The Autobiography (Paperback)
Truth is, although a Geordie (with Belgian extractions-me dad was a Gent!) I loved Jimmy Greaves more than Wor Jackie. OK, public flogging or spitting. Time and place...just remember lads, I'm old and live in Australie. But did you see Mr Greaves play? As a ten year old I did and bloody hell, just for me he scored a banana goal (from taking a corner) and against ManUTd! Sweet! That it was Bobby Charlton who thundered in a thirty yarder and not as the records say, Dennis Law is neither here nor there. I saw it, I was up the pylon of a floodlight, pissing and s***ting meself with delight and expiring in a cloud of Woodbine, ale fumes and pie farts. They lost and that, even in them days, was reason for celebration. So Mr Greaves could have quoted his life story in the manner of a telephone directory and I would still have been his fan. But he doesn't. This is an entertaining read. You shoudda have been picked Greavsie for the finals in 1966! Roger who? Well it was not the scouser's fault just that dour Ramsey with his retentative sphincter. I watch the current crop and think what ever happened to those poachers of old that sat almost in the goalies pocket and picked `em clean when it counted. You were the King-bugger Elvis-who was he?
