Timing is everything,
This review is from: Take Time for Your Life: A Personal Coach's Seven-Step Program for Creating the Life You Want (Paperback)
The day before I went on holiday, I worked 22 hours to finish things up in the office, deal with personal things, get packed, tidy up etc. It happens every time I go away and is a symptom of how busy life is these days. Not good eh?
Cheryl Richardson's sensible and benign presence has been helping me work towards my grand plan for several years now. I first turned to Take Time for Your Life when I was incredibly busy, yet felt stuck in a rut and drained. I do love running my own HR consultancy, but there's more to life than just building a business.
This coaching is refreshingly grounded. Mrs Richardson started her working life as an accountant and is shows; there's no nonsense or airy piffle about her advice. She asks her readers to get their house in order in every respect, including financial, if they want to live the life of their dreams. That balanced approach is so important.
There are several points that resonate with me. She uses an analogy of an over-filled plate. If that's what your life is like at present, you have to reduce the quantity there before you can make other changes and start doing the things you really want to do. And she talks about taking very good care of yourself so that you are well positioned to care for others and yourself properly. She also points out that some changes will take a while to implement so your plans for change may be long term. For some reason I found that extremely comforting. My own plan was designed to run for three years. As I wrote this there's about three months to go. I have made huge progress towards my goals. Inevitably there have been some slips along the way and things haven't always worked out, so I have had to revise plans (but isn't that life?). I keep Mrs Richardson's guidance in mind and bash on and I am clearly getting to where I want to be.
The advice is simple to understand, easy to apply and enjoyable to read. Take Time for Your Life is recommended for tired people who want a friendly, sensible person to help them make some changes for a better life.
