This review is from: Downwind (Audio CD)
I agree with the previous reviewer Cross Currents, Downwind are excellent and that Xtasea and Emotions are also very good but I am uneasy with the jazz-rock tag. I am not sure what is an appropriate genre tag but probably none at all,. Remember that Duke Ellington did not like his music to be called jazz and prefered "Jungle Music" so there are all sorts of issues about what you label music.
Mike Oldfield and Didier Malherbe od put in good performances although the formers presence does cause some confusion amounst some listeners about the direction of musical influence in the relationship.
I appreciate that many people are more comfortable with the instrumental pieces by this band and are not so keen on the songs I do not agree that they are such a big mistake as the previous reviewer here thinks. Having recently rediscovered Dick Morrissey's old band If I have changed my opinion on this issue. I used to prefer the instrumental tracks and passages of their music but now appreciate the songs for what they are (brilliant). This has brought me back to Pierre Moerlen's Gong with new ears.
My advice is to buy all these reissues and enjoy a slice of music history. Time is the Key is hypnotic. Pierre Moerlen was a genius percissionist who is sadly missed
