Everything you might ever want to read (and probably more) by this underrated writer,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Delphi Complete Works of Elizabeth Gaskell (Illustrated) (Kindle Edition)
I bought this because I finally decided I would get around to reading some of Mrs Gaskell's work, in particular North and South, a book I have always meant to read but never have. So far I have only read North and South but I have found it an incredibly impressive book. I have always enjoyed Dickens but the characterisation of Margaret Hale shows up how shallow and unconvincing Dickens' female characters (especially his young female characters) are. On the strength of North and South and Wives and Daughters I do think Mrs Gaskell is underrated. In addition, North and South with its portrait of the living conditions of the working poor and of industrial unrest gives the lie to those who think women only write about domestic subjects.
I would have appreciated some annotations/explanatory notes but that seems to be too much to expect of kindle editions (and you can't grumble about it at this price).
This Kindle edition is pretty good quality for the price with a relatively small number of typos (although regrettably one paragraph in a key scene is hopelessly garbled which is a shame). I have bought other cheap kindle editions which had a horrendous number of typos but the publishers do seem to have bothered to do some proof reading for this edition. It is also worth knowing that when you first go into the book you need to backtrack to get to the contents pages but they are there.
