1.0 out of 5 stars Why ruin what was so perfect?, 16 July 2011
This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides [DVD] (2011) (DVD)
The first Pirates Of The Caribbean was a perfect film. It had an incredible soundtrack, interesting and hugely lovable characters, the ability to appeal to all ages, a great range of humour, brilliantly choreographed action scenes and, most of all, a beautiful and vibrant atmosphere. I love that film so much I have Jack Sparrow's Swallow tattoo on my chest. The second and third films also did not disappoint, with the same beloved characters and an intriguing villain played fantastically by Bill Nighy.

And then there's.... this; this heaping pile of crap. Gone are the beloved characters and interesting relationships from the good films, replaced by a villain whose powers are never explained (he's magic just 'cause, y'know?) and his motivations are dull and void of passion.
Speaking of passion, the most appalling thing about this film is the writer and director's ability to take the same characters, played by the same actors, and make them boring and almost change their very personalities. Depp, Rush and McNally do their best to play their respective characters well despite an appalling script and almost awkward direction, in relation to the banter between the characters.
The fight scenes are lifeless and badly paced, the supporting cast, as a collective, is completely void of charm and an depth whatsoever and the overall story and pacing of the film feels like it has no purpose, no grand scale or meaning. It is pointless!

Before this embarrassing slice of hell came along we had an epic trilogy full of a huge spectrum of fantastic characters, beautiful locales and wonderful stories and sub-plots. Now? Now we have that same trilogy but with this hideous tumour sticking out of its side, making the entire thing seem so much less beautiful.

I cannot stress this enough: please, please, if you love and cherish the POTC trilogy like I do then you must, please, avoid this crap at ALL COSTS. It won't just disappoint, it will chill you to the bone.
This film was a mistake, it should never have been conceived and it should be forgotten.

Do you agree that they get worse as they go along? I think I will just buy the trilogy and ignore this one. It sounds like its more Disneyish than the others, its seems to have become just a money making franchise, unfortunately there will be a fifth, oh dear...

They had an advert for it already??? It is a big shame cast wise regarding traditional casting not being present! But nothing lasts forever. I will still watch this for the sake of a movie and still the same setting pirate style I love! But if it truly is so bad I can only hope they find the source and learn from the past, there is NO reason or excuse for anything to go down hill no matter how many additions any franchise has, The Fast And The Furious was patchy but is still thriving well. Pirates we all share a little, most knowing the outcast life and society at our heels! But the adventures are unlimited so then too can the movies, no matter even for POTC 12!!!! It just needs a director and all the staffing below to be passionate enough and openminded enough to not only feed good scripts but great casts and keeping them! Keeping up those beautiful visuals and the music we all know and love! I would be surprised to see a POTC to out do the original and first instalment but there is no reason that they can't try ;-)
