Good, but not a classic.,
This review is from: Turok (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
I bought this game along with my new Xbox as well as COD 4, Gears 1 + 2 and far cry 2, so to be fair it was up against some stiff competition from the very beginning. I am a big fan of Turok, right back to the original on the PC, so was quite excited to get this game as well. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed with this game when I first played it.
The developers have done a nice job of revamping the game and bringing it away from the old ways and trying out some new styles and have done an excellent job with the graphics and scenery in the game. The back rounds are beautiful and the long grass and vegetation is somewhat interactive. Also there are some beautiful views from high cliffs, which you can stare out over and enjoy. But who the hell buys a game for that I hear you say!
The game play is interesting, with a neat storyline which is captivating. A nice addition of flashbacks makes the story extra special. There are however a few faults. The aiming system is extremely difficult. The joypad is way to sensitive, and aiming the reticule accurately on your enemies is quite difficult. I found myself dual wielding weapons and taking shots in a general direction, hoping for the best. This is not the ideal method to play the game, as it drains your ammo quickly. I felt that this game would benefit from a COD aim assist to help you close in on your enemies.
Saying that the enemies have reasonable AI and there seem to be plenty of human enemies, but I found there were not enough dinos for my liking. The game allows you to use the dinos against your enemies, e.g. by shooting the dinos, which in turn makes them attack the human enemies. A neat trick, which in turn saves you some time, effort and ammo.
There is a nice selection of weapons, some more suitable for stealth than others, e.g. the bow and arrow. This gives the opportunity to stealthily kill all enemies rather than an all guns blazing style. I found one of my favourite things in this game is the ability to dual wield weapons (hold two guns instead of one). This makes the game play far better, plus there's the added ability to mix the weapons to give you extra punch. This really is a neat addition to the game.
Overall, I was disappointed with the game, it leaves something to be desired and lacks something the other FPS out there now, have. I would recommend this game, if you could pick it up for cheap or second hand, but it's not worth forking out and arm and a leg for. Final verdict. Good, but not a classic.
