Not his best, but still a good tale.,

For the first time, I'm starting to worry about Pratchett losing his touch.
The cast of characters contains many old friends- Vimes, Vetinari, Von Lipwig, Harry King etc, and some new ones (a Stephenson analogue, as you might expect). Dark deeds in dark places, vested interests losing their vests, Diskworld realpolitik and some thinking out of the box. I liked it, but....
There was something subtly "off" about this book - some of the lightness of touch was missing. The usual morality tale disguised as comic fantasy, but some of the throwaway remarks were a little more laboured than I'm used to.
It was like very, very good fanfic: in 500 years, scholars may be disputing if this was *really* written by Pratchett,
In that sense, he's following in the footsteps of Shakespeare.
So, not his finest hour, but still a good read.
