5.0 out of 5 stars Lucia Popp, supreme Daphne, 11 May 2012
This review is from: Strauss: Daphne (Home Of Opera) (Audio CD)
Glad to see this beautiful opera set widely available again (even if I did have to pay four times as much for my set last year)!
But this recording is worth whatever I had to pay as it stands above any other recording of Daphne that's out there. The main reason is the exquisite singing of Lucia Popp. Her performance is unsurpassed by any other recorded Daphne -- Renee Fleming and all. The sheer beauty and agility of Popp's lyric soprano voice is reason enough to buy this recording, but the deeply felt emotion and acting skill that this lovely woman possessed enhances her interpretation of this great Strauss role even further. Just listen to her closing scene qnd imagine how Richard Strauss would feel if he had been able to hear such a voice sing his wonderful music. This set is brilliantly conducted by Haitink who also gets great performances out of his orchestra and the other singers.

Hello, Scots lass. Does the bonus disc contain an English translation of the libretto? Thanks.

The libretto is only in German. Very annoying as this is the only version of the opera I have.

Thanks for the info. I own the Bohm set (DG), which has a translation (though it is slightly cut). If I'm not mistaken, this EMI reissue is a reproduction of the original release which had no English translation, but I'm only guessing, because EMI's recording of "Intermezzo" also has the libretto in German only.

Neil Prague says:
Absolutely agree, Scots Lass! Lucia Popp was (and still is, posthumously) my favourite soprano and this role is one of her finest achievements.

When I was a student in London yonks ago, I saw that she was signing copies of this recording (on LP then) in the old Music Discount Centre (an excellent classical-only record shop) on Saturday morning the following weekend. Being a good-for-nothing lazy student, I got sloshed on Friday night and overslept. Despite a mad dash into town I missed the signing and 30 years later I still castigate myself for my slobbishness on that day!

As you say, a wonderful performance by a wonderful woman, without whom the world would have been far poorer.
