A classic Victorian Ghost Story,
This review is from: This House is Haunted (Kindle Edition)
As a fan of John Boyne’s books I was looking forward to reading this and I was not disappointed. This is a well plotted chilling Victorian ghost mystery that I couldn’t put down. It tells the tale of young Eliza Caine who lives in London with her beloved Father. After going out one evening in filthy weather to listen to one of Charles Dickens’ talks, Father is taken ill with something akin to pneumonia and dies the next day. Eliza, now on her own answers an advertisement to become a governess to two children in Norfolk.
Queue, large crumbling mansion, sinister handyman, an elusive carer, a dashing but married solicitor and of course two children who are – shall we say – strange, especially the girl Isabella.
Yes, there are undertones of Turn of the Screw and maybe a hint of Woman in Black but ultimately this is Boyne’s tribute to the Gothic Victorian mystery with engaging characters, well rounded story and of course, should be read with the light on! I loved it.
