I recently reread this novel in preparation for the newly released Cold Equations trilogy by David Mack and, indeed, many of the threads from this novel are picked up in Mack's trilogy. However, to avoid spoiling readers, I won't go into the exact specifics.
As the cover suggests, this novel is unashamedly a Data novel, as he and the crew of the Enterprise set out to investigate an attack on Commander Bruce Maddox (the man who petitioned to use Data to build his own androids in "The Measure of a Man") and the disappearance of the esteemed Professor Emil Vaslovik, a cyberneticist and mentor of Data's creator, Doctor Noonien Soong.
If there has to be one warning with this novel, is that fans of The Next Generation only may be put off by the numerous references to various artificial intelligences that appeared in The Original Series. It wasn't a personal deal breaker for myself and it must be said that the vast majority are little Easter eggs that I imagine most people would just pass off.
