Manipulation, Money & Mayhem,
This review is from: The Man Who Risked It All (Mills & Boon Modern) (Kindle Edition)
I usually like Michelle Reid's books. This, however was not one of them. The blurb on the back of the book held promise of a good story. It just didn't make it.
Franco Tolle, as the blurb will tell you, was the ultimate playboy with all the appropriate toys. He meets our heroine, Lexi Hamilton, sleeps with her on bet which he later says he didn't mean yet still took the money, impregnates her which leads to a hasty marriage which infuriates his father, leaves her in the far wing of the family castillo as far from him as possible, is not with her when she goes into premature labour and loses their child because he is feeling sorry for himself and is drunk in a bar, and then is hurt when she leaves him. To add insult to injury, Lexi is sent a video of Franco taking the bet money and Franco in bed with Claudia, Marco's sister, on the night of their child's stillborn birth. Franco realises some 3 years later that his best friend, Marco, lied about sleeping with Lexi moments before a massive suicide crash that kills Marco and seriously injures Franco.
A wise man at this point would probably call his estranged wife and grovel. But no, Franco continues to play games, manipulating Lexi at every turn using whoever he can to achieve his aim. If I were Lexi I would tell him to sign the divorce papers now and get out of my life as you are a complete wastrel. I suppose Lexi does rather do this, but not very well as, ultimately, she forgives the rat and they reconcile. I'm sorry but this is not a male lead character I like. I don't care how injured he is or how fragile his mental state is or how good the sex is, Franco does not come across as trustworthy. Yes, he has been played by Marco and his sister, Claudia, but his responses and refusal to deal with that betrayal does not make him a strong Alpha type, but a simple Beta Rat.
You may enjoy this book, but I'd rather have the divorce papers.
