Customer Review

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING J J FANS!, 27 Mar. 2005
This review is from: 5 (Audio CD)
The above two reviews are inaccurate and misleading! True J J Cale fans will realise that the track Katy Kool Lady is in fact not Katy Kool Lady at all but an obscure track that none of us have heard before.

I believe that, when "5" was originally released on vinyl, "Katy Kool Lady" was accidentally replaced with this song which is called "Out of Style". Later issues of the album fixed the mistake and "Katy" was put back in her rightful place.

Curiously, years later, when the album was first issued on CD, the same track appeared in place of "Katy" again. I guess the same masters were used for the first CD release as for the first vinyl release (A pleasant surprise for us Cale fans who were upgrading from vinyl and had heard OF it but never heard it!). I'm not sure if any recent CD issues have corrected the "mistake" again and put Katy back on the album but "Out of Style" has now been released under its own title on the 2007 unreleased recordings compilation, "Rewind".

Either version of the album sounds great to me and I'd personally give it 4 stars, it being one of the "core" early albums you will never tire of listening to :)

Thanks to both 'e-maneamon' and 'Photomic' for pointing out this issue. I've checked both my LP and my cd, and as you both says, 'Katy Kool Lady' (time 2:20 on LP) is not included on the cd, but incorrectly listed on the incert. As an advice to potential purchasers: It's no big deal. This is among my favourites of all albums, and I fully agree with 'Photomic's last line, except for the 4 star. I 'll give it 5 stars. And actually I prefer 'Out of Style' prior to 'Katy Kool Lady'. To me, JJ Cale's 7 first albums are almost equal superb, but maybe '5' is my favourite of'em all. Audiowise it's also very good.
Addendum: I purchased my cd many years ago, there might have been changes to the subject since then.
