Good Printer - Shame about the driver!!,
This review is from: HP Officejet Plus 6500A e-All-in-One Web Enabled Printer (Print, Scan, Copy, Fax, Wireless, e-Print) (Electronics)
I have purchased and used many HP Printers over the years and there has always been a consistent theme - the hardware is great, but the software tends to be poor. This printer.....almost breaks the trend, but not quite!
It was easy to set up and install everything. The display even has nice touches like showing you a little video for how to install the cartridges. Twisting the plastic protectors off the new cartridges was about the hardest part and that was okay after the first one.
Configuration was very easy and it connected seamlessly to my Wifi router. The software installation on our PCs and laptops also went really smoothly. Each time the installation correctly identified the printer over the wireless connection. It also didn't seem to burden my PC with unnecessary items in the system tray.
Scanning works fine and its great to have the document feeder that lets you stack up a number of sheets to scan, fax or copy. The duplexing unit works fine as well, though its funny to see the paper partially pop out of the front to let the ink dry before pulling it back in to print on the other side.
So - what is the fly in the ointment? Printing Envelopes!! The list of supported paper envelope sizes is miniscule! Standard english envelopes such as DL size are not listed. To make it worse, there is no option for creating a custom size!
I contacted HP online support who, after a bit of explaining, eventually understood my issue. They then pointed me to a web site showing the specification for the printer and that DL envelopes are not on the list!
I expressed my disappointment to them and said the situation is ridiculous for HP customers in the UK. Fortunately they then provided me with a workaround, which was to also install an old Deskjet 990 printer driver alongside the Officejet driver. Funnily enough, the Deskjet 990 driver has DL envelopes on the list and prints them fine on the printer! This shows there isn't an issue with the printer itself, but that HP have dropped a clanger when writing the driver! I couldn't get an answer out of the support person about HP releasing an updated driver that would fix this silly issue.
So all in all, I love the printer and I am happy to keep it because it works really well for 99% of what I need it for. Its just shame that when I occasionally print envelopes I have to do it through the other driver.
This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5! Come on HP printer driver division buck up your ideas and stop letting the hardware down!!
