This review is from: Skyfall [DVD] (DVD)There are so many Bond fans with strong feelings on the genre that there will never be consensus. But the box office figures alone prove that Bond IS back and how! Ultimately, so many Bond directors have found it hard, if not impossible, to get the balance right. Pre-title sequence, girls, cars, gadgets, villains, one-liners, climax, character development etc. etc. Many have claimed the series to be formulaic. But like the Vodka Martini itself, the cocktail must be mixed (or shaken) perfectly to create something to the taste of both the mass market and the Bond fans. There is little doubt the Sam Mendes has succeeded at almost all levels. Like many fans, my own personal favourite has always been OHMSS: Partly because it was directed sensitively with time for characters to develop and partly because it had the guts to have a different style of ending. Skyfall (perhaps as a tribute?) also succeeds in these areas but with the bonus that, unlike Lazenby, we have a leading man who both the critics and public embrace as a great Bond.
Perhaps the best tribute one can pay is that this is a great movie, not just a great Bond movie. And not only does it close certain chapters within the genre: It opens up new ones which seems to leave the franchise looking as strong as ever.
Will Mendes return to direct another? Never Say Never Again.
