I find slushy teen romances rediculously trite and boring,
This review is from: Crazy/Beautiful [DVD] (DVD)
but this is not slushy and certainly not trite, despite its relatively happy ending.
The two leads play out an astonishingly interesting and thought/emotion provoking love story with a refreshing degree of respect for the script and the characters they play.
The story is satisfyingly unclean...we don't see rich, happy, well adjusted families here; we see trouble, danger and pressure.
If Crazy/Beautiful had been handled badly by the actors or director, it could quite easily have come across formulaic and 'slushy', as it is, the film is at the top of its genre and the direction and performances are full of depth, subtlety and promise.
And yes, Kirsten and Jay have a distinct on screen chemistry which certainly adds to the film's quality.
As does the film's soundtrack which is eclectic, but well chosen and appropriate.
If you must, rent it first, but I'd advise buying it. This is not an embarrassment to any dvd collection.
