Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Belkin Energy Saving Insight Energy Cost Monitor (Personal Computers)
A great fuss free product, but please be aware that the device consumes energy itself!! check first the annual usage by plugging in the device and leaving past the 45 minute point so it displays the usage with no other device attached. You will need to subtract this from the usage for any device attached later.
I would say not particulary accurate for devices not using much power, but great for things like fridges and freezers. But nevertheless it gives a good indication of the power hungry monsters.

Hi thanks for your review... I've just ordered one of these so i will take your good advice. Do you have any recommendations of a power meter which won't cost me anything to start using ?

TFC says:
The cost to run the unit would be in pence per year.
There is no electrical devices that run for FREE, it either run on mains or on batteries.

In order to get an accurate running cost for the item plugged into this device you would need to know if the device is including its own power use or not. I would expect this device to use only minimal power (as you suggest - in the pence per year). However this is not what the device estimates its own usage at, it estimate in pounds per year. It would appear that you do not own this device and therefore cannot accurately comment on this? If you are monitoring a an item using less than £100 per year, then the inaccuracy of the device monitoring could be 10%. Assuming this is just a basic CT metering device then such inaccuracies aren't really helpful. Belkin do not give any figures for the power usage of the device or any information as to why it displays a usage even when no device is plugged in.
There are many electrical devices that run for free, they are solar powered, ever heard of the sun?
