Chanbara Striptease - juvenile, but fun.,
This review is from: Chanbara Striptease [DVD] (DVD)
A simple enough premise, a girl gets transported on the day of her 20th birthday back in time for a ritual succession in her martial art training, naked as the day she was born, with only a box.
She gets involved in an incident (as you do), and saves a peasant girl from some wacky, evil ninjas (those Japanese eh? Anything for a laugh).
After this, a Seven Samurai scenario comes in - where the girl protects herself and the villagers from a money hungry bandit group led by a mysterious Geisha, who has a simple technique of getting what she wants.
As the title of the film suggests, there is nudity - but there isn't a stripping scene - this is probably a translation convention. Chanbara Breastflash would probably be more appropriate, as there is certainly much concentration on that region of the female anatomy for most of the film - Baywatch eat your heart out!
It lacks the blood of a lot Japanese films around it - and to me, it's aimed at teenagers more than adults, and it is slowly paced, which works to it's detriment.
There are some funny moments though, and the fight scenes, whilst staged and not as spectacular as you might expect, are still well done, and I can't think of many movies which have the heroine and villain performing swordcatching tricks with their boobs!
The end result - juvenile - Check. Japanese offbeat humour - Check. Violence - Yes, but tame compared to films such as Versus, Azumi or other sword blade flashing films that are humourous. Nudity - Duh.
A guilty pleasure for some perhaps, but if blades, babes, and boobs are the right ingredients for a night in with mates, some snacks and a few drinks - there's more than a little fun to be had here.
If it's high drama, or more serious action you want to see, why the hell would you hire this out or buy it in the first place?!
