Not as "Hot" as I remember,

Sometimes you revisit a film that you haven't seen for twenty years because you remember it as a good picture. Sometimes, as in this case with "The Hot Spot", you wonder what all the fuss was about.
I remember seeing "The Hot Spot" on channel 4 in the early 1990s one night and thought it was an above average film. It seemed then to hit the right note regarding story, acting and yes, eye candy. Well, the latter I still agree with; but the gorgeous Jennifer Connelly seems to be under strict instruction to perform as bland a performance as possible, and while Virginia Madsen is easy on the eye, she plays an annoying no-depth to her character hammy slut. Don Johnson appears trying to act the role rather than acting the role. The characters played by Johnson and Madsen I find impossible to like and Jennifer Connelly really has no character to play in this film - just a small town innocent teen. Memory has played a trick as I thought there was a genuine sultry atmosphere throughout the film, but now I find the attempts as about as sultry as a day in the Artic Ocean.
It just goes to show why it's sometimes best to leave some films as a memory (even if the memory is wrong) and to not go back to some of them. The catch of course is that you don't know it until you have gone back to a film and find yourself disappointed.
