Excellent: Politics, socio-economic concepts and culture as a game,
This review is from: The Player Of Games (The Culture) (Paperback)I was very pleasantly surprised at the excellence of this book. What begins as a story about games - what we and the protagonist consider to be essentially distractions - slowly morphs into a very real battle of ideas between cultures. What we have here is a novel about culture at its purest, most abstracted form; societies distilled into concrete sets of rules so complex that people spend their entire lives mastering them.
Banks masterfully steps you through the evolution of these games as the novel progresses, never leaving the reader behind, and elegantly prompting you to reevaluate your understanding of what a "game" is as he abstracts it to the nth degree.
An amazing read, and a great book to sit back and ponder on once you're finished.
