Enjoyable early P.D James mystery,

Here's how the story begins (no plot spoilers): The Maxies have been at the manor house for many years, but by the time of the novel, they are having to make and scrape a little in order to keep Martingale going with a minimal staff. A startling decision by one of the family, which may threaten their future, is quickly followed by murder.
Cover Her Face is the first P.D James mystery, and is also the first outing for Adam Dalgleish. Being the first, it isn't James at the height of her powers. The characters are not explored in the same depth as in later novels for instance, and the themes are lighter. But it is an enjoyable listen, especially as it is read by Roy Marsden - who played Dalgleish convincingly in many TV adaptions. Marsden has a deep pleasant voice, with a gravitas which makes him convincing as an intelligent and tough, but sensitive senior policeman.
Having forgotten the solution as it is decades since I read the book, I didn't guess whodunnit until very late on in the story. The blurb on the back of the CD cover gives away who is the victim - hardly a major plot spoiler, but you might want to start the story in total ignorance. A reasonably simple story, but with a good confusion of motives and suspects, and a revelation late in the day, all add up to a good listen.
