3.0 out of 5 stars Glorious music - some weak cast members., 31 Dec 2010
This review is from: Les Miserables - The 25th Anniversary in Concert at the O2 [DVD] (DVD)
The cast for this production are mostly superb. However, I would say that Nick Jonas and Camilla Kerslake are the weak points here.

Jonas struggles with the role voally and is very weak - nerves perhaps? Kerslake acts like a spoilt, sulky teen in Act One and so one tends to lose any sympathy for her character. Vocally, however, she has a bright, silvery soprano.

This is a shame as the rest of the cast are excellent and the musical direction outstanding. Boe, Salonga, Lewis, Lucas, Galloway and Karmiloo give some real shiver-down-the-spine performances.

Die hard Les Miz fans will love this DVD but for a stand out all-round performance I would stick to the 10th Anniversary Concert at the Albert Hall.

I agree with you about both negatives here however just to point out that it isn't Camilla Kerslake on the DVD - it's Katie Hall. Camilla was originally due to perform but was replaced by Katie who is performing as Cosette in the UK tour. :-) And also, I personally think Samantha Barks is due a huge shout out for her performance. Stunning.

I have seen Katie Hall in both tour and original West End production and she only adopted the sulky rebellious teenager on the tour. In the West End she was gentle and loving with Valjean, and coupled with her beautiful voice makes her one of my favourite Cosettes. I am disappointed that she used the direction from the tour in this concert rather than the West End, as she could have been wonderful otherwise.

I watched the DVD last night. It was great! Loved it! Except for Jonas and the person who played Cossette. She was sulky and a bit of a spoiled brat. What were they thinking when they casted Jonas? He cannot sing, and he had a pained expression almost throughout the time. His words were slurred. Compare him to Michael Ball when he sang on stage later.
