I do not know which film these unfavourable reviews are aimed at, as having just watched this version of Gladiator, I must say that I am impressed. Anyone talking about filmed in High-Def as I used to, doesn't know what they're talking about; before HD, films were almost always made using film cameras and still are, a high budget film like this will have certainly used 35mm film which is considerably better than HD, so it is a case of the digital transfer. A digital scan will already have been made for DVD and the question of quality really comes with whether the original scan was upscaled at which point you may as well watch the DVD on a good DVD player, or whether the film was rescanned with the new quality standard in mind. I am confident that this must have been rescanned.
Obviously I haven't spent much time reviewing the film itself, but I suspect that you will have seen one form of it already. Excellent fight scenes. Excellent acting, and Fantastic plot (despite being extremely inaccurate). The computer graphics do a fantastic story an immense justice. If you haven't seen it before, you should. I doubt many of you will regret it (but leave yourself plenty of time, as it is a long film).
