This review is from: Lucifer TP Vol 01 Devil In The Gateway (Lucifer (Vertigo)) (Paperback)
firstly, this is only a lucifer novel in title only, it does not have the same feel as other Lucifer comics in the seris, in the same way the Preludes and Nocturnes is not a true Sandman Novel, and Original Sins is not a Constantine Novel. With that said however, it is an essential read.
This Novel alone is openended and characters are left underdeveloped. HOWEVER this is because it is an ongoing seris, which continues to get better and increasingly epic, and before that can happen, a scene is needed to be set, a scene which alows itself to move away from Sandman, and alows Mike Carey to create his own characters, without "borrowing" any of Niel Gaimens.
All in all, its entertaining and a good read, this one doesnt hold up to any of Gaimens work, but the others in the seris do, with Lucifer become increasingly more charming and sinster, its safe to say Mike Carey has made this character unique and created a fantasy story which should be on everyones reading list
