This review is from: Pathe Archive: A Year to Remember - The 1930s [DVD] (DVD)With almost ten hours of viewing, each year of the decade has a running time approaching an hour, with a diverse mix of domestic and international news items, a series of significant news events captured on film, with each film a potted history lesson.
With the rise of fascism in 30's Germany along with the election of Adolf Hitler, the fear of war permeates through much of the collection, a collection made up of news articles including various Royal engagements along with all the familiar pomp and ceremony. Aviation also features prominantly, with news articles covering the likes of pilot Amelia Earhart, as well as dramatic pictures of the Hindenberg airship tragedy.
The main stories are occasionally interspersed with unrelated news snippets, while more light-hearted news articles include highlights of sporting events such as FA Cup finals and the Wimbledon Championships. This is just a taste of the many interesting and informative films in this black and white collection from the British Pathe Film archives.
Although the films from the early years of the 1930's do sometimes suffer from a grainy appearance, with the odd marks and lines etc, when taking into consideration the age of the material the picture quality is generally OK/acceptable. There are no extras or subtitles. As with the 1950's Pathe collection from the same series, the only minor gripe I have is with the packaging - the 'folding' case which holds the 3 discs is minus an outer case to slip into, but this is an excellent newsreel collection.
Here is a few details of the discs and the number of news items:
