A Sumptuous and Illuminating Circus History,
This review is from: The Circus, 1870-1950 (Hardcover)
A really sumptuous and beatiful book and certainly more than worth the money if you are really interested in the circus and its history. While it is true the text is tri-lingual (triplicated in English, French and German) and this may seem odd for the English only speaker;, it does help to increase the market for a book like this from the publisher's point of view and therefore make an extraordinary work like this a possibility. It isn't a theoretical academic book on circuses but more of a general and richly illustrated history full of exciting facts and primary materials. The text is written by some outstanding circus scholars and has been scrupulously researched, as indeed is their illuminating choice of material from rare photographs of circuses to playbills, posters and other ephemeral memorabilia. Considering the production values and the length of this book - the price is extremely reasonable.
