Classic BBC radio drama,
This review is from: The Complete George Smiley Radio Dramas (BBC Radio 4 Dramatisations) (Audio CD)
The boxed set turned up on schedule and was well packed and exactly as described.
The set consists of 21 CDs, about 10.5 hours, which between them provide a single consistent recounting of the eight John LeCarre books featuring George Smiley.
Overall, the books have been expertly abridged and performed in a calm understated manner that is both pure BBC and also ideally suited to the subject matter. The voice acting is excellent, with the exception of some of the Asian accents in 'The Honorable Schoolboy' which slide into caricature.
The stories are classics of the spy genera and as such are worth hearing in themselves. In addition, they have some grounding in reality - LeCarre spent time in the secret services and remains well informed about them. In particular, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is essentially a fictionalized version of the real-life hunt for a high-level mole in MI5. (See Peter Wright's infamous book "Spycatcher" for the real-life version.)
