This review is from: Get The Funk Up - The Ultimate Parliament Collection (Audio CD)
This compilation album features songs drawn from quite a large portion of the band's career. Sadly, in order to give a good representation of Parliament's massive output, several of the tracks are in shorter versions than are found on the original albums, notably "Mothership Connection" and "Aqua Boogie". While the latter track only loses an instrumental bit from the end, the entire shape of the former is lost - the song gets to the chorus and then fades out, whereas in the album version, there are several verses and choruses.
However, if you are looking for a cheap overview of the variety of styles, wacky ideas, catchphrases and characters that Parliament went through, then this is probably a very good place to start. From the James-Brownesque vibe of "Up for the down stroke", to the pro-black-rights theme of "Chocolate City", to the cartoony grooves of "Rumpofsteelskin", the tracks are also of invariably good quality.
Clocking in at an impressive 74.5 minutes this CD represents extremely good value for money, and is a good enough method of getting into the way of the P-funk - get "Get Funked Up" and you probably will.
