Hammer Classics to own on DVD,
This review is from: Hammer Horror Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This DVD boxset contains three Hammer Classics that paved the way for numerous sequels and spin-offs!
First up is The Curse of Frankenstein. Starring Peter Cushing as the mad barrona and Christopher Lee as his psychotic creation. A legal injunction from Universal prevented Hammer from using the 'bolt-through-the-neck' look made famous by Boris Carloff, so they had to go back to basic on the monster1 The end result is a lot more humanised creature, but all the more frightening for it. Lee's piercing eyes more than make up for his lack of dialogue and the film remains a horror classic.
Next is Horror of Dracula, Hammers first outing with the blood sucking count and arguably the best. Christopher Lee made a name for himself in the title role with his mesmering eyes and his way with women! Sticking closer to the origional story than any of the other Dracula outings this 1957 classic has aged exceedingly well and is still a pleasure to watch!
Finally The Mummy, in my opinion the least of the three (but then I never really got on with the Mummy franchise!) but still well worth watching. Its Lee v Cushing as usual with Lee pursuing Cushing across England as a 2000 year old mummy, seeking to revenge the desercration of his lovers tomb.
All in all a great buy for lovers of old horror movies and I look forward to more Hammer titles being available soon.
