5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic debut album from a truly gifted singer-songwriter, 11 Feb. 2011

This review is from: Doo-Wops and Hooligans (Audio CD)
This is a truly amazing debut album by Bruno Mars which truly showcases what a brilliant singer and a gifted song writer he is. The album takes you on a real emotional journey with each song telling a different story. There isn't a bad song on the album at all. The highlights for me are `grenade', `talking to the moon', `the other side' and `somewhere in Brooklyn'.

This is a must buy for any music fan!

Grenade - a truly brilliant opening track. Here the lyrics talk of unrequited love and the extremes that a person would go to for love. `I would go through all this pain, take a bullet straight through my brain, yes I would die for you baby but you wouldn't do the same' this is a powerful track which is sung with such conviction and emotion. It is easy to relate to and you will soon find yourself singing along. Bruno's vocals are outstanding here and he completely blows you away. 10/10

Just the way you are - this was the first single released from the album topping both the UK and the US charts. This is another beautiful track which has a very different feel to `grenade'. Here the lyrics talk of how amazing a girl is and how her imperfections are what makes her perfect. `When you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while...' you can't help but smile at the lyrics. 10/10

Our first time - a nice laid back track about a couple's first time together having sex. More often than not artists attract controversy for singing about sex and are often slammed for explicit lyrics. Here Bruno Mars takes a different approach and presents sex as a special intimate experience. This is very refreshing and a track that you wouldn't mind young children listening to. 8/10

Runaway baby - this is a fast paced fun track which will have you up and dancing. It's a real up beat feel good track which will cheer you up if you're feeling down. 9/10

The lazy song - this is a great track about chillin' out and doing nothing. It's a real care-free slow paced track that seems more appropriate for listening to while sunbathing on a beach. `Today I don't feel like doing anything, I just wanna lay in my bed ...' 8/10

Marry you - this song is another optimistic feel good track where the lyrics talk of spontaneity and getting married. 8/10

Talking to the moon - from the slow solo piano introduction to the build up in the verses, everything about this song says: epic. This is a truly beautiful ballad that is easy to relate to and is so beautifully written. The lyrics have you almost in tears and you find yourself caught in its depth and meaning. `At night when the stars light on the room I sit by myself talking to the moon tryin' to get to you in hopes you're on the other side talking to me too...' 10/10

Liquor store blues - this track features Damian Marley and has a real reggae feel to it. It's a nice refreshing track; very different to the deep and emotional `grenade' and `talking to the moon'. This track shows Bruno's versatility; that he is able to adapt to many different musical styles. 8/10

Count on me - this song talks of friendship and how you can always count on someone to be there. It has some sweet lyrics that you can't help but smile to. However I felt this to be a weaker track in terms of the song writing. 7/10

The other side - this track features Cee Lo green and b.o.b whose vocals both complement Bruno mars nicely. This is another catchy up beat track that has a very different feel to most of the album. The collaboration is a real success. 9/10

Somewhere in Brooklyn - this is the first of the two bonus tracks and is another highlight of the album. The song tells of a story of meeting someone at a train stop, talking, but not getting their phone number. The lyrics reflect on whether they'll ever meet again. This is another example of Bruno mars excellent song writing ability. 10/10

Talking to the moon (acoustic) - this is the second bonus track. This is an acoustic piano version of the track `talking to the moon'. At first it's difficult to distinguish the difference between the two versions. Bruno Mars' vocals are exemplary in both but the piano seems more fitting to the overall feel of the song. Though personally, I would've preferred an acoustic version of `grenade'. 10/10
