Why is it that when there are so many brilliant DVDs on ancient Rome and Egypt, no one seems to have done a series of ancient Greece of equal quality? I had been looking forward to these films by the History channel, and having watched them all now I am left with the following opinions.
The DVD on Gods and Goddesses is by far the best, fully 90 minutes long, and I didn't doze off partway through! However, there could have been a lot more information on the gods and goddesses from the Greek's idea of their creation. The DVD on Hercules, 45 minutes worth, was rather repetitive with its pictures of pottery and the short film sequences of re-enactments of Hercules' fights, and its narrative was generally bland. The last DVD, Mystical Monuments of Ancient Greece was, well, frankly very disappointing. It was less than 50 minutes in length, and given its title, you would expect a lot squeezed into that 48 minutes. Oh no. It's just a very poor, very repetitive (yet another), very basic story of the Parthenon, the Acropolis and the Agora. And that's it.
Come on History Channel, are there no other historic monuments of Ancient Greece worthy of a mention? Nothing outside Athens? Not even one? Sorry, but this isn't worth more than 2 stars for me.

I suspect the History Channel being a US TV Station, has a very different idea about European history than ours. I have other History Channel products not this box set I'm afraid!
