This review is from: The Thing [DVD] (DVD)I always loved the original B&W ( "The Thing from Another World" ), a B-movie classic if ever these was one. I was wary of a remake, especially from the gore-fetishist himself John Carpenter but this was a genuine surprise.
The original version started off with "something" crashing, the army bods flying out to see what it was, recovering a body, taking it back to the ice-station ( now conveniently cut-off from all contact! ) and all hell breaking lose! With this version you're left to watch as the characters are left to work out what is going on before all hell breaks lose.
Kurt Russell plays another stereo-typical aloof/cool guy but doesn't overplay it. The other usual characters are all present for this type of flick, the 80's style token black guys, the older guy who starts off as a hard-nut and buckles under pressure, the doctor who works out what's happening before anyone else.
It's a great piece of sci-fi horror and great flick for a Saturday night pizza/popcorn night-in. 18 rating is a little high, as is Carpenter's thing there is plenty of gore but this is more of a 15 rather than an 18.
If you like slightly tacky sci-fi horror it's well worth the time and money!
