This review is from: Primeval (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
This is the twenty sixth release from Big Finish in their range of full cast audio adventures starring classic Doctor Whos. It stars Peter Davison as Five and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa. There are four episodes, roughly 25-30 minutes each, complete with original theme music between each, and cliff hanger endings. Two episodes per disc on 2 discs, and a short booklet with some pictures of the cast and production notes.
This series follows on from the events of the Mutant Phase, and ties together an ongoing story arc revolving around Nyssa's psychic abilities that started way back with her collapse at the end of the TV series Four To Doomsday.
Nyssa is ill, and the Doctor takes her to the best place in the universe for an ill Trakenite - Traken. The TARDIS memory banks tell him that the best healer in Traken is Shayla, who lived thousands of years before Nyssa's time, before the time of the Keepers.
The two are soon plunged into mystery and intrigue as an alien presence tries to break through the protective shield around Traken, powered by the entity known as the Source.
It's a decent little tale that gives the Doctor a great dilemma to work through. Davison does a fine job of playing a character who seems to be holding on to the situation by his finger tips, with a sense of rising panic as things get more and more manic. It's full of references to previous stories (especially the Keeper of Traken) which might make it a little hard to follow for those not familiar with those tales. But it's not too difficult to pick up if not.
The main let down in the sound effects surrounding the main villain, Kwundaar. In order to make him seem creepy and otherworldly the production has made it almost inaudible. It's a let down, and one of the very few mistakes by the production team across the whole range.
A decent tale, but with some dodgy production. 3 stars only for this one from me.
