Looks like E thinks the glass is half empty!,
This review is from: Beautiful Freak (Audio CD)
The album starts with a happy sounding plinky plonky tune on "Novocaine for the Soul" but before long an ominous string section comes in to darken the mood.
That's a recurring theme on this excellent album. E tries to look for the bright side but he can't help seeing the darker shades of the world and his life in particular. In "Susan's House" for example a walk through a grim urban landscape is described while the writer tries to keep his mind on a visit to his girlfriend.
There are songs about dark personal themes such as "Rags to Rags" and "My Beloved Monster". Even the touching long song "Beautiful Freak" is couched in slightly unnerving and negative terms.
The song quality varies at times. "Flower" and "Manchild" wouldn't be favourites of mine. However overrall the song equality is excellent even apart from the better known songs like "Novocaine" and "Susan's House".
So probably not an album to listen to when you're feeling down but the music and lyrics are superb and it is are worth listening to over and again.
