This review is from: The Mindful Way Through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness (includes Guided Meditation Practices CD) (Paperback)
The methods described in this book are simple but by no means easy and they certainly are not instant. The book requires several readings - although it is clear and very readable, the mindful way of looking at depression and unhappiness is so different to what we are used to that it takes a while to really grasp. Even then it is not immediately obvious how doing the meditations and exercises on the CD is supposed to help. (I think the authors could have made this clearer and that is the only reason I don't rate this book and CD 5 stars). All I can say is try it and stick with it and you are almost sure to get something good from it. What I get out of it after just a few weeks' practice is a new sense of what is real in any given moment. It is like there is one "me" experiencing distressing feelings, distressing thoughts and memories etc and there is another "me" that can stand back from all of that if it so chooses and can make choices that are not driven by the distress. And the distress passes! And all the other bits of reality can get a look in and most of them are a more pleasant place to be than my head!
Although the authors have backgrounds in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) it is not necessary to know much about CBT or to like it or believe in it on order to benefit from the mindful approach. It is on a different level. A very human level. These methods are for anybody to improve their emotional and spiritual life whatever you have been through and whether or not you have been given a psychiatric label.
