Remmington v Philips v Panasonic,
1 May 2009
This review is from: Remington R7130 Comfort 360 Rotary Shaver (Personal Care)
First things first, all electric shavers will miss hairs, if you want a totally clean shave then a wet razor is the only way to go. So why ever bother with an electric ? Less irritation, less mess and no need to stare at yourself in the mirror while shaving.
I have three shavers at present, the top of the range Remmngton, top of the range Panasonic and a new Philips coolskin.
Battery life - Remmington wins hands down. It not only beats the other two, it absolutely trounces them. Panasonic being only good for 5 shaves and Philips slightly more, the Remmington will happily keep going for longer than you will ever need on say a 2 week holiday.
Irritation - it takes your skin a good month to get used to a new style of shaver and for you to get the hang of the pressure and movement of the shaver. The Remmington I have found is slightly worse than others I have tried, possibly due to the closeness of shave. Shaving powder (if you can find it) reduces this dramatically to the point of no irritation at all. The philips scores highly for this but that's to be expected as you are using moisturiser the whole time it's on. Panasonic is the happy medium.
Actual shaving finish and speed - Panasonic wins this. Very fast and very close- Remmington second, takes a while longer to get the same shave but just as close, Philips third- although a good shave, if you add on the time it takes to clean yourself of goop and hairs it takes longer and is only really worth it if you are shaving in the shower.
Build quality - Panasonic wins again - brilliant build. Remmington second the heads feel a little plasticky but the body of the shaver is solid, the stand well designed- Philips third - flimsy, lightweight and very plasticy.
Sound - this is actually very important in my opinion for a shaver - if you can hear the hairs being cut or not then you can tell when an area is clear. Philips near silent motor wins this easily. Panasonic second with it's high pitched buzz and Remmington third, the motor is not that loud but the movement of the shaving heads makes it hard to hear the shaving.
Conclusion - I love the Panasonic but it's battery life is appalling, the Philips is good for in the bath or shower but don't even think about it if you already dressed and want a quick touch up. Remmington is the jack of all trades and master of, well, one - outstanding battery life. It looks good and feels solidly built. If you can get it cheap then its a good buy but expect shaving rash for a month, possibly longer unless you can get hold of pre shave powder. Which one do I use ? If I'm going on holiday the Remmington is perfect or if the battery is run out on my Panasonic (doesn't take long) . Normally the Panasonic but in the shower - the Philips !!
