'Someone to Love Us' by Terence O'Neil,
This review is from: Someone to Love Us: The shocking true story of two brothers fostered into brutality and neglect (Paperback)If you only read one book this year this has got to be the One. It will make you smile,it will make you weep. Three little brothers, the three youngest in a dysfunctional family of eight children, were abruptly removed from home by Social Services and taken into care. The baby, called Freddie, was the fortunate one; he was taken in by a kind foster mother. The other two little boys,Terence and Denis, after being placed with various foster families, ended up in an isolated farmhouse with the most evil pair of people on earth. It was 1945. War was raging across Europe;apparently this was the reason why the little boys were, virtually, lost in the Social Services system. The farmer and his wife punished the boys on a daily basis. They were only kids yet they were made to work outside in bitter January weather and forced to bathe in water which was iced over. A beating and starvation was the order of the day.
This, incredibly, moving account is told by Terence, the survivor. He tells his story from the heart; honest, without embellishment, without self pity and without one iota of bitterness towards the biological parents who failed these three beautiful little boys. A must read.I give it 5 stars
