It seems too fashionable or easy to censure novelists with a reputation for quality work. Of course, not everyone will enjoy a writer's style or latest effort in the same way as others might. Sadly McEwan falls into this trap; the once bright hope, the early highlighted talent, the literary connections of a generation.
Novels should entertain. After all, if they do not, one might question why bother reading them. McEwan takes themes, stories, a message etc and enhances them through his plots and these plots, in turn, illustrate his points. It is this that makes him both highly entertaining and enlightening.
`Sweet Tooth' is my read of the year so far. The characters are well drawn, the plot sustains and twists and turns in a delightful way. The construction suits the plot which suits his themes and all this with elegant, readable and highly pleasurable prose.
I urge you to read this as an example of a good read. If the critics wish to pick holes then let them. Entertainment is key and it is here in this excellent story.
