Having worked in what I consider to be the most dysfunctional university in this green and pleasant land I was initially drawn to this series by its premise. When I found out it was by the same team of writers who produced Green Wing (a tragically under-appreciated and uniquely British comedy) I was even more intrigued.
The show is a delight and whilst comparisons with Green Wing are inevitable (set in a labyrinthine institution which many have experienced but few understand the workings of, a picaresque central character (Matt Beer) with a strong supporting cast, beautifully observed asides etc.) it must be recognised as a standalone work. Some characters get more of a bite of the cherry than others, Lydia Tennant had considerably greater scope than actually was made use of, Flatpack only became two-and-a-half dimensional in the final episodes but hopefully they will develop in the next series (I have to assume that there will be a second series as life without one will be a bleak prospect).
Overall the writing was immaculate and the cast managed to pull huge amounts from their scripts. For fans of Green Wing this is a natural choice and for those who are of the opinion that British comedy is in decline this series is reason to take heart. I hope beyond measure that the commissioning editors out there realise what a gem they have.
